How to chat with a YouTube video using AI

Instead of scrubbing through a 90-minute interview for one answer, ask the video directly: give Claude the transcript, and the whole video becomes something you can question.

What "chatting with a video" actually means

AI models don't watch video, they read. When a tool lets you "chat with a video," it's feeding the video's caption transcript to the model. That's good news: transcripts capture nearly everything that matters in talks, podcasts, tutorials, and interviews, and text is what models like Claude are best at reasoning over.

Set it up in two clicks

  1. Install the YouTube Transcript to Claude extension.
  2. On the video you want to interrogate, click Add to Claude and pick a project.
  3. Open that project on claude.ai and start asking.

Because the transcript carries [m:ss] timestamps, Claude's answers can point at exact moments, "the pricing discussion starts at [31:04]", and you can jump to the video to verify anything.

Questions that work brilliantly

Chatting with many videos at once

Add several videos to the same project and your questions can span all of them: "Across these four earnings-call breakdowns, what did every analyst miss?" This is the real unlock over per-video tools, the project becomes a library Claude has already read, not a single-session gimmick.

Privacy note: the extension has no servers. The transcript travels from YouTube to claude.ai entirely inside your browser, only when you click the button.
